چکیده

Introduction Safety and mobility are key concerns for State Highway Agencies (SHAs), especially during the winter season when ice and snow accumulation on roads and bridges can create hazardous or impassable driving conditions. Various chemicals, including magnesium, sodium, and calcium chloride, calcium magnesium acetate and urea, are used by SHAs as anti-icing and deicing solutions on transportation infrastructure. The effectiveness of these chemicals for deicing and anti-icing has been demonstrated. However, the possible detrimental effects to concrete in transportation structures have not been fully examined and documented. Although these chemicals offer possible cost savings advantages to SHAs, the true cost effectiveness cannot be determined without establishing the potential for chemical attack and premature deterioration leading to costly rehabilitation or replacement. The goal of this study was to examine the chemical effects of deicing and antiicing chemicals on portland cement concrete and to recommend changes to concrete mixture designs, construction practices, and winter maintenance procedures that will not compromise the concrete durability.

The Effects of Concrete Pavement Mix Design Parameters on Durability under Freeze and Thaw Condition

This paper is based on an experimental research that examined the effects of concrete`s major parameters on durability of concrete pavements and curbs under freezing and thawing cycles. These parameters include concrete mix design parameters such as water-cement ratio, fine aggregate percentage and using air entraining admixture and simulating real freeze-thaw cycles that infrastructures underg...

Effect of Use of Granulated Slag Instead of Portland Cement on the Properties of Concrete

In this research, 210 concrete cube specimens (15cm) were made replacing 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 50, and 60 percent of slag powder from Isfahan Steel Mill for cement. The control specimens were made with 350 kg/m3 cement content and the water cement ratio in all specimens was 0.51. The Slump value and compressive strength of concrete specimens in 7, 28 and 90 days were obtained and th...

Freeze–thaw damage and chemical change of a portland cement concrete in the presence of diluted deicers

The present study experimentally investigates the effect of different diluted deicers on concrete deterioration. Laboratory simulations of environmental freeze/thaw cycling were first conducted on Portland cement concrete specimens in the presence of various deicers (NaCl, K-formate, NaClbased deicer, K-acetate-based deicer, Na-acetate/Naformate blend deicer, CMA deicer, or MgCl2 liquid deicer)...

Effect of Impressed Current on Bond Strength Between Steel Rebar and Concrete

The deterioration of bond strength between reinforcing steel and concrete as a result of impressed cathodic current with respect to the exposure time was investigated. A current in the magnitude of 3ma/ft2 (based on reinforcing rebar area) was used for a period of five years. Chemical analyses for sodium (Na+), potassium (K+) and chloride (Cl-) ions in concrete cylinders were performed as a fun...
